Short answer first. Scholarship directories let you browse by country for a reason: the awards are not spread evenly across the map. Of the 494 scholarships in our dataset, 154 sit in the United States, 31 percent of the whole directory. China is second with 70, ahead of the United Kingdom at 61, and the top five host countries hold 380 of the 494, over three quarters.

China's second place surprises readers who only watch the Anglosphere, and it is structural: a large government scheme plus university awards across a big system, listed in a directory that bothers to count them. Germany's low count is the mirror image of the same effect: German funding is real but concentrated in one famous scheme and in tuition-free public universities, neither of which generates hundreds of separate listings. A directory count measures listing behaviour as much as generosity, and the honest way to read it is as a map of where the applications are.

The degree tilt

Master's 160 Bachelor's 143 Doctoral 121

Below the table sits a long tail: the remaining 82 records scatter across 38 further host listings, most with a handful of awards each, including multi-country entries run across the European Union and joint listings that pair two countries. For an applicant set on a specific smaller destination, that tail is the whole game, and it is exactly where eligibility checkers earn their keep, because no ranked list will ever surface a three-award country.

Browse the same directory by level and the tilt is toward the master's degree: 160 records list a master's, 143 a bachelor's, 121 a doctorate. The master's is the study-abroad product, one or two years, fee-bearing, and the level universities most want to discount. Our shortlist guide shows how finders turn these counts into a personal list, and ScholarshipMatch runs the country and level filters together against your profile.

A small share of the directory is not tied to one country at all: 8 records are global in scope, 4 run across the European Union as multi-country awards, and a few are joint listings pairing two countries. They are easy to miss in a by-country browse, which defaults to single flags, and for applicants without a fixed destination they are often the best-fitting records in the whole set.
