Most Chevening guides end at the deadline, which is a shame, because the deadline is the shortest part of the story. The Chevening scholarship timeline runs for eleven months from application to enrolment, and each stage has its own work attached. This is the full 2027/28 cycle as Chevening itself publishes it, with the stages applicants usually discover too late marked as such.

The big deadline

Applications for 2027/28 opened on 4 August 2026 at 11:00 UTC and closed on 6 October 2026 at 11:00 UTC. The hour matters: Chevening runs on UTC, and the official timeline page tells applicants to check what 11:00 UTC is in their own time zone. Anyone who read a November date for this deadline, in a third-party dataset or roundup, read a wrong one; harvested dates drift, and this cycle's close was October 6.

The full timeline, stage by stage

  • From October 2026: sifting. Applications are checked against the eligibility criteria. Nothing is asked of you in this stage except patience.
  • Mid-October 2026 to January 2027: reading committees. Independent committees assess the applications. This is the long silence, and it is scheduled, not a signal.
  • Mid-February 2027: the interview shortlist. Shortlisted applicants are invited to interview, which is when the parallel work below stops being theoretical.
  • March to April 2027: interviews. Held at British embassies and high commissions around the world.
  • Mid-June 2027: results. Outcomes are announced from mid-June onwards.
  • 8 July 2027: the offer deadline. Successful applicants must have received and submitted at least one unconditional UK university offer by 17:00 BST on this date.
  • September to October 2027: studies begin in the UK.

The deadlines inside the timeline

The stage applicants underestimate is the university offer. Chevening does not place you: the award is conditional on an unconditional offer from a UK university, and that offer has to exist by 8 July 2027. University application deadlines therefore run inside the Chevening timeline, months ahead of it, and a scholar who waits for the June results before applying to universities has misunderstood the design. References and English language evidence sit on the same parallel track, requested at their own stages; our requirements guide covers what each document is and who can provide it.

If you missed this cycle

The cycle is annual and its shape is stable: an August opening and an autumn close, on the pattern this cycle set. The productive use of the waiting year is unglamorous: choose the courses, line up the referees, and build the leadership record the essays will need, because none of those can be manufactured in the nine weeks the window is open. When the next window is announced, the dates that count are the ones on Chevening's own timeline page; every other list, including any dataset on this site, is a lead to verify.
